My visit here wasn’t planned. I met an old girlfriend for coffee in the Globus shopping centre earlier. We hadn’t seen each other for over five years and I don’t think either of us expected it would be anything other than a quick chat.
Anyway our meeting went well. She’d taken several English courses since our romance and was now almost fluent. She let me know she could actually understand what I was saying now. It was pretty amusing to learn she had spent a summer with me without actually understanding much of what I’d been talking about.
After a very pleasant dining experience at Sushiya at Arena City earlier, I suggested we extend our meeting and dine at Sushiya on Independence Square. She agreed so we made our way to the restaurant.
The branch on Independence Square isn’t as modern as that at Arena City. The tables are also less private. It offers the same menu though; good sushi and oriental dishes at very reasonable prices.
To start I had udon soup (glass noodles, shitake mushrooms, chicken fillet, crab sticks, shrimp, egg, and wakame) for 74 UAH. My companion went for salmon miso soup at 39 UAH.
For the main we decided on one of Sushiya’s bargain sushi sets. 239 UAH got us the shrimp quartet set; 30 assorted shrimp rolls. I was pretty hungry so I added a dish of beef with broccoli in teriyaki sauce at 99 UAH.
For drinks we had orange juice at 19 UAH and 4 ginger teas at 29 UAH.
Food and service were excellent. English translations of all the dishes are on the menu. The total bill for food and drink was 626 UAH.
The restaurant is located at the northern end of Independence Square, next to McDonald’s. The closest Metro station is Maidan Nezalezhnosti. The restaurant is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Sushiya have branches throughout Ukraine. There are around 20 in Kiev.
Visit Kiev Ukraine dined at Sushiya on Independence Square in January 2017. Unlike most other Kiev tourism websites we pay for our own meals and do not tell staff we are reviewing their restaurant.
