Tourism in Kiev went into rapid decline after the 2014 Ukrainian Revolution. I was forced to temporarily abandon this website and return to the UK until the situation normalised.
One thing I really missed about the city was its cheap sushi restaurants. While living in the UK I had to make do with the likes of YO! Sushi. My last visit there cost around £60 and I wasn’t impressed with the quality.
Fast forward to 2017. Tourism to Kiev and Ukraine had more or less returned to pre-2014 levels and it was time to relaunch this website.
I returned to the city in a bitterly cold January. I hadn’t slept the evening before and was extremely tired. I really should have gone to bed but my desire for cheap sushi was strong so I ventured out for some satisfy it.
The closest sushi restaurant to my apartment was the Sushiya branch at Arena City. They’re a big chain with restaurants throughout Ukraine. There are about 20 in Kiev.
I took my seat in the restaurant and was quickly brought a menu. The menu was in Ukrainian but English language translations are given alongside each item.
Sushiya was cheap back in 2014, but the devaluation of the Ukrainian currency meant the prices were even more affordable.
It was time for a splurge so I ordered a variety of items from across the menu. My choices were tempura shrimp with sauce at 94 UAH, glass noodles with seafood (mussels, shrimp, squid etc.) at 99 UAH, and Philadelphia salmon rolls (8 pieces) at 99 UAH. For drinks I had a bottle of Somersby Cider at 39 UAH plus an Americano coffee at 21 UAH.
All the food was excellent, especially the Philadelphia rolls. Service was fast and friendly. The total bill came to a very reasonable 352 UAH.
The Sushiya restaurant at Arena City is situated right next to the Pinchuk Art Centre and across the road from Besarabsky Market. The closest Metro stations are Teatralna, Ploshcha Lva Tolstoho, and Palats Sportu.
This branch is open 24 hours a day, every day of the week.
Other branches of Sushiya in Kiev city centre include Bohdana Khmelnytskogo Street, Independence Square, and Gulliver Mall.
