Taxi

It may come as a surprise to many foreigners, but in Kiev any moving vehicle is a potential taxi. To hail one, simply stand at the side of the street and stick your arm out. Most drivers are regular folk and don’t speak English, so maps and local friends come in handy for negotiations. Success is dependent on traffic conditions en-route to your destination, the size of your wallet and whether they have a clue what you are talking about.

When you arrive at Boryspil International Airport you'll be greeted by hundreds of friendly taxi drivers, all extremely keen to relieve you of most of your spending money. Prearrange transport from the airport if you can.
Taxis from the train station are also overpriced. Walk a little and get one from the street.

The small buses and trolleybuses that serve Kiev are great if you're a local but are a complete nightmare if you can't speak Russian. Destinations are written in Russian only and the the likelihood of any driver/conductor speaking English is even less probable than finding an English-speaking taxi driver. Stick to the Metro if you can, then taxis, and use local buses as a last resort.
