It is efficient and cheap with a ride between any 2 stations costing a very reasonable 50 kopecks. Plastic tokens must be purchased, either from ticket office at station entrances or adjacent machines (they accept 1 and 2 hyrvnia notes). Monthly and half-monthly passes are also available.

It opens at 6 am and operates until midnight. Be careful of the swinging doors at station entrances. They’re heavy and pack a punch.

Kiev also boasts a Funicular Railway.

Travelling on the Metro can be a bit daunting at first simply because most of the signs are in Russian. It's best to plan your journey before you set off. Think about how many stations you need to pass before you reach your destination and then COUNT the stations as you pass them. Announcements are made as you reach each station but only in Russian and the sound is very distorted.

At the entrances to most Metro stations you'll see lots of old ladies (babushkas) selling small items such as fruit, shoelaces, sunflower seeds etc. What little pensions they get are fairly worthless due to rising inflation and the relatively high cost of living in Kiev. So even in their seventies and eighties they still have to earn a living to survive.
