Tourist information centre to open soon

An independent tourist information centre will open in Kiev in the New Year.

Situated in the Khreschatyk Plaza business centre, near Khreschatyk Metro Station, it promises to help tourists navigate a city where English is seldom spoken and the tourist infrastructure is poorly developed.

The centre will provide free city maps and guides, advice on places to visit, and sell souvenirs and books. It will also offer free city walks, sightseeing tours and other fun events.

New supermarket opening in Kiev city centre

Supermarket company Billa-Ukraine will open a new store at Kiev’s historic Besarabsky Market next month.

The new store will open to the public on November 5 and will operate from 6 am until 1 am daily.

Besarabsky Market is an indoor market located at the southern end of Khreschatyk. It is named after the Bessarabian (Moldovan) merchants that used to live in this area.

Billa, owned by the Germany’s REWE Group, opened its first supermarket in Ukraine in 2000.

Kiev celebrates Europe Day (finally)

Kiev will finally celebrate Europe Day this coming Saturday. Numerous tents, each representing a European country, will be set up along Khreschatyk, and give the public a change to taste national cuisines, learn about different cultures, and more.

The festivities were due to take place earlier this month but were postponed due to the political demonstrations taking place in the city.

Ukrainians will celebrate the end of World War II, ‘The Great Patriotic War’, on Wednesday May 9. As is traditional on this public holiday, veterans will march down Khreschatyk watched by thousands of onlookers. Ukraine saw some of the fiercest fighting of the war, with over 7 million Ukrainians losing their lives.
