New subway stations open

3 new Metro stations opened in Kiev today. The stations have extended the length of the Blue Line (Kurenivsko-Chervonoariyska Line) by just less than 4 kilometres.

The new stations are:

• Demiivska – near Moskovska Square – convenient for Prime nightclub, Central Intercity Bus Station, Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine
• Holosiivska – near Holosiivska Square – convenient for Mir Hotel
• Vasylkivska – close to Saxon


New terminal opening at airport

A new terminal will open at Boryspil International Airport this week.

Terminal F will open on September 8 but is only expected to become fully operational in October.

Approximately 40 percent of flights serviced by the airport will be transferred to the new terminal.


Kiev Metro fares rise

The cost to ride on Kiev’s Metro system rose today. A token for a single journey now costs Hr 2.

Fares for the funicular, buses, trams, and trolley-buses remain unchanged at Hr 1.5.


Annual and quarterly transport passes phased out

Annual and quarterly passes for Kiev’s public transport system were phased out today.

Monthly and half-monthly tickets are still available. Monthly tickets, valid for one calendar month, can be purchased from the 22nd day of the previous month. Half-monthly tickets can be purchased from the 15th of the relevant month.

The fare for a single trip on the Metro using a token is UAH 1.70.

Contactless plastic cards are also available. The cards themselves cost UAH 7 and can be loaded with up to 50 trips.


Windrose launches flights from Kiev to Kaliningrad

Ukrainian airline Windrose Aviation will commence flights from Kiev’s Boryspil Airport (KBP) to Kaliningrad (KGD) on October 9 2009.

The flight will operate 3 times a week; on Monday, Thursday, and Friday. One way fares start at $134 excluding taxes.

Windrose also offers flights from Kiev to Ashgabat in Turkmenistan (ASB), Monastir in Tunisia (MIR), Moscow Domodedovo International Airport (DME), Simferopol (SIP), Tashkent in Uzbekistan (TAS), and Tbilisi in Georgia (TBS).


Flights from Kiev to Simferopol

Kiev-based airline Khors commenced flights between Kiev International Airport (Zhulyany) and Simferopol on June 19.

The flights operate once a day on weekdays until October 4. A one-way ticket cost 500 UAH.


Metro fares to rise

The cost of riding the Kiev Metro will soon quadruple. Fares for a single journey will rise from 50 kopecs to 2 hyrvnia from November 1 2008.


Metro introduces swipe passes

Contactless swipe passes have been introduced on the Kiev Metro. The new passes cost Hr 32 and allow 30 days unlimited travel from the day they are first used.

The cards can be topped up at any Metro station. Plans to introduce quarterly and annual passes are in the pipeline.


Funicular railway to close for repairs

Kiev’s funicular railway will close next month for urgent repairs. The railway, which links Podil to the Upper Town, will shut down on September 17.

Officials expect the work to take around 1 month.


Wizz Air to bring cheap flights to Ukraine

Wizz Air has opened an office at Kiev’s Boryspil Airport and is set to bring cheap flights to the Ukraine. The Hungarian budget airline will launch its Ukrainian domestic schedule on July 11 and offer low cost flights between Kiev and Lviv, Odessa, Simferopol, Kharkov, and Zaporozhye. Flights to Simferopol from Lviv and Kharkov will also be available. One way fares will start as low as UAH 79.

On September 15 the company will launch its international flights from Kiev. The destinations initially served will be London Luton, Dortmund, and Milan Bergamo. Prices for one-way flights to Milan/Dortmund will start at UAH 199.
