Contactless swipe passes have been introduced on the Kiev Metro. The new passes cost Hr 32 and allow 30 days unlimited travel from the day they are first used.
The cards can be topped up at any Metro station. Plans to introduce quarterly and annual passes are in the pipeline.
Kiev’s funicular railway will close next month for urgent repairs. The railway, which links Podil to the Upper Town, will shut down on September 17.
Officials expect the work to take around 1 month.
Wizz Air has opened an office at Kiev’s Boryspil Airport and is set to bring cheap flights to the Ukraine. The Hungarian budget airline will launch its Ukrainian domestic schedule on July 11 and offer low cost flights between Kiev and Lviv, Odessa, Simferopol, Kharkov, and Zaporozhye. Flights to Simferopol from Lviv and Kharkov will also be available. One way fares will start as low as UAH 79.
On September 15 the company will launch its international flights from Kiev. The destinations initially served will be London Luton, Dortmund, and Milan Bergamo. Prices for one-way flights to Milan/Dortmund will start at UAH 199.
A charter plane flying from the Czech Republic to Kiev’s Zhulyany Airport, crashed in a field outside the Ukrainian capital yesterday. All 5 passengers, believed to be Czech nationals, died at the scene.
The Ambassador of China to Ukraine was hospitalised yesterday after a Range Rover coming off the pavement smashed into his car near Shota Rustaveli. Kiev’s pavements are commonly viewed as an extra lane by many drivers, particularly those with expensive cars.
The Transport Ministers of Ukraine and Russia, Mykola Rudkovsky and Russia Igor Levitin, have announced plans to build an autobahn (motorway) between Kiev and Moscow. The construction timetable has not yet been confirmed.
The Rezidor Hotel Group has signed an agreement with developers VI Center LLC to operate the Radisson SAS at Kiev’s Boryspil Airport. Radisson SAS Hotels are part of the Rezidor Hotel Group. The hotel will offer around 300 rooms and is expected to open in 2009. The company already runs the Radisson SAS in the city centre.
Adria Airways, the national airline of Slovenia, has announced it will commence weekly scheduled flights from Ljubljana to Kiev on December 29.
Finnair have announced that a second weekly flight from Helsinki to Kiev will commence in April 2007. In addition to the existing Thursday service, a flight will depart Helsinki at 10 am on Tuesdays.
