Ukraine to co-host Euro 2012

Ukraine and Poland have won a joint bid to host the Euro 2012 football championship. In a meeting yesterday in Cardiff, Wales, UEFA President Michel Platini announced that the bid scooped 8 votes from the 12 members of the voting committee. Italy secured 4 votes, while another joint bid from Hungary and Croatia received none.

Rolling Stones announce first concert in Ukraine

Ageing rockers the Rolling Stones will play their first appearance in Ukraine at Kiev’s Olympic Stadium on July 25 2007. The concert is part of their newly announced European tour that also sees their first visits to Serbia and Romania.

FIFA chief backs Ukraine’s Euro 2012 bid

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has backed Ukraine’s joint bid with Poland to stage the 2012 European football championship. During a one day visit to Kiev he said ‘I hope that the championship will be held here in Ukraine.’

Spielberg Visits Kiev

Film Director was in Kiev this week to launch a film about the survivors of the Ukrainian holocaust. The documentary Spell Your Name, directed by Sergei Bukovsky, tells the story of the Babi Yar massacre in Kiev, when the Nazis killed over 30,000 Jews in the space of two days. Spielberg, whose grandparents came to the United States from Ukraine, also visited the memorial to those killed.

Kiev Prepares for Scotland’s Tartan Army

Kiev is bracing itself for an invasion of around 5,000 Scottish football supporters on Wednesday. After defeating France 1-0 at the weekend, interest in the Euro 2008 qualifying fixture against Ukraine has soared.
