March 20th, 2008

George Bush will make his first official state visit to Ukraine at the end of this month. He will arrive in Kiev on March 31 and spend two days in the capital before departing for the NATO summit in Bucharest. During the visit he will meet with Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko. Ukraine’s proposed membership of NATO will be discussed by the two leaders.

“NATO will be discussed by the two leaders,” of course, what else would one expect from a self-proclaimed “war president” from USA?

They’ll push and push the issue that joining NATO is in Ukraine’s best interests, despite the fact that, according to repeated surveys, it is not popular among Ukrainians.

Perhaps “democracy” just goes so far and means only so much to the elite?

In the end, we’ll see how well Western rhetoric and propaganda works.
