Ukraine has a reciprocal health agreement with the UK so emergency medical and dental treatment is free. The US Department of State strongly advises all citizens to obtain private medical insurance before travelling to Ukraine.
Visitors should take good note of the following:
- Water – Drink only bottled or boiled water.
- AIDS – Ukraine has one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS in the world. Estimates vary from 1 – 2 % of the population. It is spread mainly through intravenous drug use and prostitution.
- Rabies – There are large numbers of stray dogs in Kiev. Although the risk of catching rabies is actually quite small, anyone bitten should seek immediate medical attention.
