Babushka

An woman in Russia or Ukraine is called a babushka. With small pensions and savings eroded by inflation, many are now forced to make a living doing poorly paid public jobs or selling small items on the streets.

Babushkas are commonly seen cleaning parks, sitting in museums, selling fruit and vegetables near Metro stations, or begging at tourist attractions and churches.

Many babushkas also make a living by renting a room in their apartment. They can be found waiting for passengers at major train and bus stations.
