Sunduk Bar holds a special place in my heart. It was one of the first places I visited when I first arrived in Kiev back in 2004. It was fairly new at the time, I think it had opened a couple of years earlier, at a time when bars in the city centre were fairly thin on the ground.
To call it a bar is a bit of a misnomer. With its wooden panel interior it does bear a resemblance to a British pub. However there is no bar area as such, just individual table seating. It would not be the ideal place to come if you’re looking to meet new friends. Most customers are diners.
Sunduk (Chest in English) offers a good selection of Ukrainian and European beers, including house beer (several varieties) at 25 UAH for half a litre. We were there to eat though and gave the alcohol a miss.
The menu, available in English, offers pizza, salads, soup, plus meat and fish dishes, many of which are cooked Ukrainian-style. My first choice of lamb was unavailable so I went for the grilled beef and potatoes at 217 UAH while my dining companion chose salmon steak at 239 UAH and a Greek salad for 85 UAH.
What followed next was the kind of amateur service that used to be prevalent in Kiev a decade ago. My friend was quickly served her fish and salad while my steak arrived a good half-hour later with no explanation or apology. It’s simply not acceptable.
The bad service was a shame. I’ve had some decent meals in here but am not in a rush to return now.

There are two other Sunduk Bars in Kiev. One on Leontovycha Street, next to St Volodymyr’s Cathedral and another on Prorizna Street, near Zoloti Vorota Metro Station.
