Puzata Hata is a Ukrainian restaurant chain offering local cuisine. There are around a dozen branches in Kiev, plus others in cities such as Lviv and Odessa.
All the restaurants follow the same format. Grab a tray and choose your dishes from the counter, pay at the till, and then find an empty table. The cuisine is generally Ukrainian, though some branches offer dishes such as pizza. Prices are low.
We were on our way to the Pinchuk Art Centre when we decided it would be a good idea to grab a bite to eat first. The Puzata Hata restaurant on Baseina was close by, so we decided on that.
We grabbed our trays and made our way to the counters to select our dishes.
I chose borsch at 12 UAH, chicken wings at 19.50 UAH, sausage at 25.50 UAH, potatoes at 11.50, a baguette at 3.50 UAH, and orange juice at 11.50 UAH.
My dining companion went for mushroom soup at 16.50 UAH, baked mackerel at 45 UAH, vegetable stew at 17 UAH, a bread roll 3.50 UAH, and tomato juice at 11.50 UAH.
The total bill came to 177 UAH.
The soup was good but that’s the only positive thing I’ve got to say about the food. The rest was almost stone cold and the bread verging on stale.
I left most of my food. It was -15 outside and I needed warming up. Cold sausage and potatoes weren’t doing the trick. A few seconds after I gave up, a tramp came to the table and asked for my leftovers. I gladly obliged and, after thanking me, took my tray and enjoyed a free lunch.
I’m not sure whether we caught them on a bad day or whether this branch is consistently poor. A few summers ago I lunched daily at the Puzata Hata restaurant on Khreshchatyk/Passage and experienced consistently good, and warm food.
I won’t be going back to this particular branch again, though I’ll definitely review some of the other outlets in the near future. The prices here are low but that’s about all its got going for it. Next time I’m in this area and feeling peckish I’ll stick to The Burger.
Visit Kiev Ukraine dined at Puzata Hata on Baseina in January 2017. Unlike most other Kiev tourism websites we pay for our own meals and do not inform staff or management we are reviewing their restaurant.
